Genre

A standard definition of musical genre is:

A conventional category that identifies pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. It is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style.

In the modern day music can often cross between two or more genres. For example Indie/Rock or RnB/Hiphop. This is done by combining conventions of genres to create new or unique sounds. Pitbull is an example of someone who uses two different genres combining Hip-hop and House music.

Also new music genres are being created such as Drill which is gritty rap based around slow and heavy rhymes which are often seen to be of an aggressive or violent nature. An example of an artist that uses the genre Drill is Chief Keef.

Another music genre is Rock music.
